Frequently Asked Laser Tube Engineering Questions

What causes a CO2 laser tube to show a purple internal plasma discharge?

Sealed glass CO2 laser tubes rely on a precise ratio of Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen, and Helium. A healthy plasma glow is light pink, salmon, or white. A deep purple or violet discharge indicates that the CO2 and He molecules have escaped or reacted, and atmospheric nitrogen or ambient air has infiltrated the glass jacket. The plasma still conducts electricity, but infrared 10.6µm laser generation drops to zero.

Why does water temperature drastically affect laser tube cutting power?

CO2 laser tubes rely on rapid thermal de-excitation of lower laser energy levels via helium atom collisions. When cooling water exceeds 22°C (72°F), thermal population inversion breaks down, reducing optical cutting power by approximately 1.5% for every degree Celsius rise. Above 26°C, thermal stress cracks the output coupler mirror coating.

Can I use tap water in my CO2 laser cooling loop?

Never. Tap water contains dissolved minerals and calcium that conduct electrical current at 15,000V–25,000V DC. This leads to high-voltage arcing directly through the water jacket into the metal chassis, destroying the high-voltage power supply and shocking the operator. Always use 100% steam-distilled or deionized water.
